History & Manyata
The cave shrine on Trikuta Hills enshrines the three Pindis of Maha Kali, Maha Lakshmi and Maha Saraswati. Pilgrims have trekked here from Katra for over a thousand years. The cave shrine sits at 5,200 ft on Trikuta hill in the Shivalik range. The original 30m natural cave, used by Pandit Shridhar in the 14th century, is opened only briefly each year; pilgrims today enter via two artificial tunnels created in 1977. The three Pindis — black (Mahakali), yellow (Mahalakshmi) and white (Mahasaraswati) — are self-manifested and have never been carved or moved. Shri Mata Vaishno Devi Shrine Board (SMVDSB), constituted by Governor Jagmohan in 1986, manages 13 km of trek, Battery Car service, ropeway to Bhairon Mandir and helipad services from Sanjichat.
Belief / Manyata
Bhairon Nath chased the maiden Vaishnavi to this cave; she beheaded him at Bhairon Ghati and blessed his head with liberation.
