History & Manyata
Baba Baidyanath Dham at Deoghar (literally 'House of the Gods') is a unique sanctum that is simultaneously a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peeth — the only such site in India — where the heart (Hridaya) of Goddess Sati is believed to have fallen, manifesting as Jayadurga alongside Shiva as Vaidyanath ('Lord of Physicians'). The Shiva Purana relates that the demon-king Ravana, after intense tapasya on Mt Kailash, was granted the Atma-linga by Shiva on the condition it must not touch the ground; the devas conspired through Ganesha (disguised as a brahmin boy) to place the linga at Deoghar, where it rooted itself permanently — hence the alternate name Kamna Linga, 'fulfiller of desires'. The current temple complex of 22 shrines was renovated by the Giddhaur Maharaja Puran Singh in 1596; the central Baba Dham shikhara stands 72 ft tall with a Panch-Shul (five tridents) atop it — found nowhere else in the world. The annual Shravani Mela — every Monday of the holy Shravan month (July-August) — sees 50–80 lakh saffron-clad Kanwariyas walking 108 km barefoot from Sultanganj on the Ganga to Deoghar with sealed bahangis of Gangajal for abhishek; this is one of the largest religious gatherings on earth, recognised by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage candidate. The temple is administered by the Deoghar District Magistrate-led Shri Baidyanath Jyotirlinga Temple Trust.
