सोमनाथ ज्योतिर्लिङ्ग
Somnath Jyotirlinga
Veraval, Gujarat· Lord Shiva
Shares the Devasangam page — not the live video stream — so YouTube's licence remains with the temple.
History & Manyata
Rebuilt seven times across millennia, Somnath is the first among the twelve Jyotirlingas. Sardar Patel led its modern reconstruction after independence, restoring a continuum of worship that the Skanda Purana traces to the dawn of creation. The Skanda Purana's Prabhasa Khanda dedicates 117 chapters to this kshetra. The temple was destroyed and rebuilt seven times — by Mahmud of Ghazni (1026), Alauddin Khilji's general Ulugh Khan (1299), Muzaffar Shah I (1395), Mahmud Begada (1451), Aurangzeb (twice) — and most recently consecrated on 11 May 1951 in the presence of President Rajendra Prasad. The current Kailash Mahameru Prasad style shikhara rises 50 m above the Arabian Sea, with the famous Baan Stambha pillar pointing south where no land obstructs the path to Antarctica.
Belief / Manyata
Soma, the Moon God, installed the Linga here after Lord Shiva freed him from a curse. Devotees believe that worship here at dawn dissolves the karma of countless births.
