महाकालेश्वर ज्योतिर्लिङ्ग
Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga
Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh· Lord Shiva (Mahakal)
Shares the Devasangam page — not the live video stream — so YouTube's licence remains with the temple.
History & Manyata
Mahakaleshwar is the only Jyotirlinga facing south — the direction of Yama. The temple stands on the bank of the Rudra Sagar and is celebrated for the Bhasma Aarti, performed with sacred ash before dawn. The lingam is Swayambhu (self-manifested) and Dakshinamukhi (south-facing) — the only Jyotirlinga with this orientation, granting it supreme tantric significance. The Bhasma Aarti uses ash that traditionally came from a fresh cremation at Chakra Tirth ghat; today consecrated cow-dung ash is used. The temple was rebuilt by the Maratha general Ranoji Shinde Scindia in 1734 after centuries of demolition by Iltutmish in 1235 CE.
Belief / Manyata
Mahakal is the Lord of Time itself; it is believed that even Kaal (death) bows before him here.
