History & Manyata
Built in the 12th century by King Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva, the 65m sanctum towers over the Bay of Bengal. The wooden murtis are re-carved every 12–19 years in the Nabakalebara ritual. Construction by Anantavarman Chodaganga Deva began c. 1135 CE and was completed by his grandson Anangabhima Deva III in 1230 CE. The 65 m main shikhara is crowned by the Nilachakra — an eight-spoked wheel of Ashtadhatu, on which the Patitapavana flag is changed daily by a hereditary climber. The wooden murtis of Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra are uniquely unfinished — sculptor Vishwakarma left them so when Raja Indradyumna interrupted his work. The Mahaprasad cooked in 752 earthen pots stacked seven-high over wood fires is consumed by 25,000+ pilgrims daily and never goes stale.
Belief / Manyata
Mahaprabhu Jagannath is Krishna in his most universal form. His Rath Yatra is the cosmos itself coming out to grace devotees.
